This is the ceiling of the Piccolomini library that is part of the dome of Siena in Italy. I have not been able to capture the beauty, the details and the colours as well as I wished or the reality is, but I think you can get an idea of this amazing artwork.
The ceiling consists of painted panels of mythological subjects. They were executed between 1502 and 1503 by Pinturicchio and his assistants.
The frescos on the walls tell the story of the life of cardinal Enea Silvio Piccolomini who later became Pope Pius II.
In the first and the second picture you can also see a statue of three people standing together. It is the famous statue “Three Graces”, a roman copy of the greek original.
As always – if you click on the pictures you will be able to see the bigger version with more details :).
Absolutely stunning!! The detail and colours are incredible! Great photos.
What a beautiful shot! Gorgeous!
Breathtaking – looks amazing!!!
I love the Piccolomini!! I go there every time I go to Siena. I think the Duomo in Siena is one of the lovliest in all of Italy. Your photos are wonderful.
Glorious!
Great shots!
Wonderful, clear, beautiful shot! I love Siena….and this photo is perfect. On the contrary…I think you captured the colors very well. I feel like I’m standing there. Thanks for posting!
This is magnificent!
Impressive work. Makes me wish I could go there too!
This is art captured in art (with a camera!) – rare pieces that have to be preserved for generations to come. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

very nice capture – the framing of the first photo is awesome!
Stefan…I just had to come back and visit these photos again. I am amazed at the detail you got! The colors are so vivid. It’s just spectacular. I stood here 10 years ago! You captured the Piccolomini Library excellently! Thanks again!
The colour saturation and crispness of focus is fantastic and contributes greatly to the atmosphere and sense of place.
