guggenheim – reflections

The sculpture “The big tree” out of 80 stainless steel balls was created by Indian artist Anish Kapoor.
To the far left you can see the “Puente de los Principes de España” with it’s light art.

The Guggenheim museum designed by Frank Gehry was built in 1997 in Bilbao, Spain. The basque region of Spain had a high unemployment of 25%, was economically weak since the heavy industry used to be situated there was gone.

In an effort to revitalize the regional government spent $100 million to built the museum. Additionally a $50 million aquisition fund was created and the museum received a yearly subsidy.

The economic impact was great though: one million visitors a year spend around $250 million and generate tons of jobs …
