The Museum of the Cultures of the World in Berlin, Germany in wintertime. In Berlin the building is known as “Pregnant Oyster” because of it’s design (looking from the side).

the end and the beginning

Freedom! On a beautiful thursday I decided it was time to try to get Leia back into her natural habitat. At first she was running around at the lower part of the stem, but soon she became braver and startet to climb the 15 meter birch.

Below you can see the first pictures of the new era of her life (click on the thumbnails if you want to see the large pictures)

For a minute she also investigated the nest she fell out of 6 weeks before.

Leia is becoming increasingly mobile – the cage (even though it is a big one) was getting to small for her. So for the last couple days she got the living room as her new cage.

Jumping from couch to chair and from cupboard to cupboard she trained her muscles.One of her favorite spots was on top of the curtain where she could watch everything and would still be save from any potential attackers

She was definitely getting ready to be released back into the wild.

Leia with a milkbeard. She got used to the bottle and the formula very quickly. With feeding up to 5 times a day she was growing very fast. Her teeth were coming out and soon after that she had her first solid food – a nut.

Luke and Leia

The first few days were mostly drinking baby cat milk (formula dissolved in fennel tea with a few drops of medication against digestion problems) and sleeping. Feeding them often was becoming a challenge but with a nice boss who didn’t mind a little shoebox standing around not really a problem.

After two days I had the first real challenge though – naming them. One female and one male … Thinking of good twin names the choice soon fell on Luke and Leia.

Leia was definitely the stronger one – drinking more milk and also a little more active.

After a few days in the morning I sadly discovered that Luke had died. Most likely he suffered from injuries from the 10 meter (30 feet) fall.

the foundlings

The first day of April was one of the first warm days this year in Vienna. There was still a few centimeters of snow in my backyard, but it was melting away quickly.

Early in the morning I heard desperate screaming coming from outside. Just a few meters away (I live on the third floor) I saw a tiny baby squirrel clinging onto a branch screaming for its mother. Soon I saw a second one not far from the nest the mother had already built in January.

Only half an hour later the one on the first picture fell. Thanks to the Internet it is fairly easy to research what to do in such a case. (the mother won’t mind the human scent but it won’t take back weak and cold babies). So I decided to take the baby inside to warm up. Once I had the first one in the apartment the second one fell. When I got that one I found a third one not moving anymore on the ground. With the warmth of life came back into the three babies.

I decided it was time to try if the mother would take them back into the nest. They were so weak that they could barely hold onto the tree.

After an hour a crow took one and flew away. That was the moment I decided to take them in for good.

There was only one left outside high up in the tree still holding on – after one hour the mother at least got this one and put it back into the nest in a dramatic rescue operation.
